Melanoma awareness month |

Read the information and try the activities .
This month as the weather warms up and everyone heads outdoors into the sun it's time to remind your groups to check their skin and protect it. Protection from UV rays is important all year and especially in the warm months when we are outside more and more exposed. Although Melanoma is more common in people who have had sunburns it can occur in anyone whatever skin type they have. Every hour someone dies from melanoma. Melanoma is a type of cancer that arises from cells called melanocytes that have migrated to the skin and other places (like the eyes) during fetal development. These cells have the important function of producing melanin which colors the skin and protects it from burns. Abnormal changes in these cells are the cause of melanoma. This cancer if not detected early can spread to other organs and be deadly. Have your group read Melanoma for Dummies (here) or the Melanoma Patients information page (MPIP) (here)to get more information or order pamphlets from them for your group. Melanoma most commonly occurs on the skin but it can also occur in other areas like the eye. Everyone should check their skin and any changes in the skin should be checked by their doctor or dermatologist. If your group would like to know something about skin self examination try visiting the Skin Cancer Foundation site and remind them their physician is the best one to consult if they have any question about something on their skin. Finally, the US government has a website that provides a lot of resources and information; Cancer.gov - Melanoma Home Page (site) or try the Melanoma Research Foundation (here).
Consult with your health care providers about the programs and health related activities that would be best for your clients
